When buying bicycle parts or assembling your own bicycle you have the option of using specialized frames. A bicycle’s frame is its main component and is usually the first part you will buy when assembling one of your own. The wheels, seats, and other components of a bicycle are fitted into the frame. Some frames are specialized for specific type of terrain.

Diamond Frame

The most common bicycle frame you’ll find sold in stores nowadays is the diamond frame. This type of frame is designed with the safety of the rider in mind. The frame is made up of a pair of triangles, namely the main triangle and a pair of rear triangles. Most bicycles you see nowadays incorporate this frame especially sports bicycles.

Design and Purpose

Specialized frames basically differ in design according to its intended purpose. If you’re out looking for one you will have several factors to consider before buying one. These factors include the shape of the frame, its weight, and suspension. Before you walk into a store, you should have the type of terrain you would like to tackle.

If you’re generally looking for speed in lieu of off-road biking then you are better off with a road bike. However, if you need a sturdier frame that can handle off road bumps then you are better get a frame specially designed for mountain bikes. Picking the wrong frame for the intended terrain will definitely hold you back. You may even end up with an injury or have difficulty while riding.

Considerations Before You Make Your Purchase

When shopping for specialized frames, you should keep in mind several key factors. Other than its design and intended purpose you should also check out the weight, shape, available suspension, and material used to construct the frame. Some frames are highly specialized for certain sports activities like snow biking or downhill mountain biking.

Shape

The shape of a specialized frame will matter depending on the type of bicycle activity you want to engage in. If you’re after the speed of a bicycle, then the frame you are looking for should have the rider positioned a lot closer to the pedals and the top tube. This will have the rider hunched a bit but gives more leg room.

This design is better for road bikes but won’t work for the rough terrain a mountain bike is supposed to tackle. The hunched position will be too taxing for mountain biking. You are better off with frames that are designed to have the rider sitting in a more upright position.

Weight of the Frame

The weight of the frame will definitely have an effect on the bike’s speed. The weight and durability of a specialized frame will greatly depend on the material that was used to construct it. Nowadays, various manufacturers have used different frame materials. The materials used for frame construction include titanium, aluminum alloys, steel, thermoplastic, carbon fiber, magnesium, and other alloys.

Suspension

Suspensions should only be built for mountain bikes or bicycles designed for off road riding. Hybrid bikes may be built with some form of suspension to deal with uneven paved roads. Rear suspensions and front shock absorbers may be built into the frame.

Along with the price all the aforementioned factors should be considered when buying specialized frames. You can assemble a highly specialized bicycle on your own or you can purchase one that is designed specifically for certain terrain and biking activities. The price will vary from one manufacturer to another so setting a price range won’t be that feasible.
